The Athletics swept the Houston Regals over the weekend, winning 7-0 on Saturday night and following up with a 6-0 result on Sunday.
Although thunderstorms threatened Saturday, the weather cleared up and there was no stopping the Athletics. Before a raucous crowd of 2,682, Levi Coleman struck in the first goal within minutes of kickoff. Always an unstoppable offensive force, left back Blaine Gonsalves tallied his first hat trick since he was 13, leading a 7 goal barrage over the Regals. However, despite 3 goals and anchoring two shutouts, he was unable to bring home the NPSL national player of the week. Maybe it is the hair. Goals were also scored by Johnny Chavez and Akeil Barrett.
Halftime of the Saturday night game marked the return of the Lil Kickers Cup. Congratulations to the TSC girls on their victory as well as Blitz for the first-ever shootout win in Lil Kickers Cup history.
On Sunday, the Regals returned for a 2 o'clock showdown. The Athletics picked up where they left off, scoring early and often. Stephen Brocks paced the squad with 2 early goals, but was unable to match Blaine from Saturday night. Levi Coleman added in the team’s 4th goal and his 6th goal in four games as the A's ran their winning streak to 5 games to start the season. Goals were also scored by Johnny Chavez, Corey Albertson, and Adams “Sambo” Claros.
Saturday night, the Athletics travel to Dallas to take on the Liverpool Warriors, with an eye towards extending the league lead. They look towards taking another step to clinching their inaugural division championship and advancing to the NPSL playoffs. As long as they continue their winning ways, the Athletics have an excellent chance to host the first round of playoffs.
We look forward to seeing you on June 22 at 7 pm when the Athletics host the Liverpool Warriors.
